Thrifty Thursday - Big Deal on Big Prints

One thing about the digital world that I have noticed is that it is not always easy to actually get prints of your pictures. It is really nice to have them all on the computer to share with loved ones but the challenge that I have found is that when someone wants a copy, your home printer (even if it is photo quality) doesn’t always do the trick. On top of that, who has time to print out copies of everyone’s favorite picture? I sure don’t and I am sure that most of you haute moms don’t either. Our free time is precious enough!

Shutterfly is having a great deal right now for large prints. If you have been looking to fill a larger frame (11 x 14, 16 x 20, and 20 x 30), they are having a 50% off sale on prints of those sizes. I think this is perfect for this time of year with Easter, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day right around the corner.

or those of you that do not use Shutterfly, it is a free photo sharing site that is simple to use. Creating an account is easy as is uploading and sharing all of your photos and albums. I have even made photo books, mugs, magnets, and calendars through Shutterfly. You can bet I am going to take advantage of this sale…now all I need are some frames to fill. Go to Shutterfly now and take advantage. The sale ends April 6th. Use the code 29SW-ADV3-0B2R-8RA84E and get some BIG prints of your little ones!

Stella is super excited about the Shutterfly special!

Lazy Sunday- Another Easy Dinner

I haven't posted a Lazy Sunday recipe in a few weeks but I actually tried this one last night and not only was it easy but it was a winner. You know how I love the crock pot. I just made this with some cole slaw and baked sweet potato fries and as my hubby put it, "Why go out to dinner?" That was before I put him on dish duty.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches
Ingredients:
- 2 lb pork tenderloin
- 1 bottle beer or root beer
- 1/2 onion thinly sliced
- 1 bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce

Directions:
1. Trim fat off pork
2. Place pork tenderloin, beer or root beer, and onions in slow cooker
3. Cook on low heat for 6 or 7 hours until pork shreds easily
4. Drain liquid from pot
5. Shred pork and add BBQ sauce
6. Serve with buns or rolls

Walking Wings Review and Giveaway

Now that Stella has reached her "cruising" stage, we are doing a lot of supported walking around the house. She gets a kick out of holding my hands and walking around from one place to another and so did I. That is until I tried to straighten up and felt like a very un-haute old lady.

Upspring Baby, a company that I have shared in the past, has a product that solves this problem called Walking Wings. Walking Wings helps your child learn how to walk hands free and reduces parent back pain from leaning over. The vest allows your child to build confidence while learning how to balance more naturally, something that "cruising" doesn't let them do. The best part is that the vest straps are adjustable to fit to your height, or those of your significant other.

I have been testing it out around the house with Stella and she loves it! It is comfortable for her to wear, easy to put on, and much easier on my back! It is super cute too! What a great idea brought to us by the haute moms behind Upspring Baby.

Here is a video from The Doctors to show you how it works.

Wouldn't you love to try it out? You are in luck because Upspring Baby has generously offered to sponsor a Haute Mom giveaway for one of my lucky followers!

Haute Mom Dilemma #36 - Ridin' Around Town

Stella is 20 pounds and looming towards the 22 pound limit in her current Chicco Travel System car seat. I seem to remember a faint whisper of friends telling me to pay attention to the weight limits in car seats but I must have been blinded by the matching sets and ignored their warnings. This leaves me back on the computer researching the best car seats as Stella's first birthday fast approaches boosting her into the front facing car seat.

This morning I see that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have published a new policy that states that children should be kept in rear facing car seats until age 2. As thoughts of changing my recent search of car seats to convertible ones tug at my brain, I come across a blog asking how many parents are going to follow the guidelines. Really? Statistics show that children under the age of 2 are 75% less likely to die or be severely injured in a car crash.if they are rear-facing. The new guidelines also suggest children then transition into a booster seat until they are 4 feet 9 inches tall and are between 8 and 12 years old. Maybe I should add booster seat to my list of things to obsess about while I am at it. Luckily the AAP knows all about moms like me and have a list of approved car safety seats and boosters. Let the stalking begin!

A Walk from California to Maine - A Few Written Words

I have been sharing Arthur's story over the past few weeks; a 19 year old who has recently lost his only living parent to breast cancer. To raise awareness and funds for the disease that unexpectedly took his mother, Arthur is continuing to prepare for his walk from California to Maine. Along with being a talented photographer, Arthur also enjoys writing and participates in a groups known as Writers Block to share his words on paper.

Here is an excerpt from one of Arthur's pieces that he wrote about the loss of his mother Janet.

I try my best to keep my composure,
because everyone knows the devil can smell fear,
we take the cold steel elevator the only direction it goes,
all the way down,
to the darkest pit of my imagination,
with a golden fiddle, and tune like a riddle,
the devil leads me to what seems like the only room,
and politely opens the door,
and right there in bed instead of my soul, I see my mother's
lifeless and cold, I know this not to be her but an illusion,
my mother has passed I know this to be true,
but what I see before me is a cruel trick of death,
I can stand it no longer,
I break into tears and scream in her ears,
this is not fair,
just when I am at my lowest point,
I see a glint of golden light shining from a cross,
an older woman from the east,
an angel in scrubs comes to my side,
and tells me I haven't lost her at all,
she is inside my heart she sings,
although this does not heal me completely,
the angel has made quite a point,
she holds me close, and strokes my hair,
for what seems like another eternity,
for a moment the anguish of hell subsides into silence,
and I hear the devil shrink, shrivel, and cease,
I find myself alone in the hollow halls,
alone with my thoughts,
I make my through the echoing labryinth,
and somehow I find my way home.

Haute Mom Dilemma #35 - Sassy Stella

What did I do mom?

Sassy, stubborn, stinker, snooper are all new words that I would use to describe my daughter. My last dilemma shared how Stella's personality was coming out and I had no idea what I was in store for.

In my book of milestones (you know where I secretly compare my child to the perfect "may possibly be able to" child in the text, the words testing and protesting have been on the lists lately. It is with a tad bit of sorrow that I report she is successfully achieving those two milestones with flying colors. My husband and I have been observing, with mixed grief and amusement, the screeching when something gets taken away or the grunting and fist shake when in a situation she doesn't want to be in (like being put into her highchair).

I should have known that with the cute displays of love and affection would come an opposite emotion and action but sheesh! Someone can be a little baby diva if you know what I mean. I wish the books would tell me how long this will last. Should I start reading about early discipline? Her "I'm so innocent look"

Reaching Those Milestones

One of the things that I always notice with parents is that they gauge their child’s success and accomplishments by comparing them to others. I have a book that I bought before Stella was born that lists things she should be doing, may be doing, and could possibly be able to do (I guess those mean your child ROCKS if s/he can do them). When I hear other parents talking about “how advanced” their children are, I always have to be careful not to roll my eyes because we all know that children progress at different rates. At the same time, I find myself reading my book every month to see if Stella is doing, may be doing, and is possibly ROCKING at some of her “milestones”. So, just like many, I am guilty of using these milestones and others babies’ accomplishments to try to gauge if Stella is right where she should be.

I have to share something that Stella has started doing that is not part of any of the “milestones” that I have seen. I am in no way saying she is advanced but I was so surprised to see her doing this particular thing. Not just surprised, but completely and totally in love with my baby girl and her sweetness. Stella has this stuffed tiger that her uncle and grandfather brought from a trip to Thailand. When she first got it, it was almost as big as her but the tiger has always brought a smile to her face. Lately, she has actually been showing the tiger love and affection by hugging it, kissing it, and, get this, patting it on its back much like I do when I am trying to soothe Stella. My heart just fills with warmth that somewhere along the way, she has learned to show love and affection. I am sorry, but that beats all the milestones put together. And then she tosses the tiger to the side like garbage…ah, that’s my girl.
She also shows affection with this Steeler's coaster. She doesn't get that from me.

A Walk from California to Maine - Arthur's Interview

There were so many things going through my mind when I heard about Arthur and his story.  As a first time mom, I really was curious about how the loss of his mother, his only parent, had affected him.  I wondered about how her imprint on him, impacted the walk that he was now planning.  So I sat down with Arthur one afternoon and asked him some questions.

Tell me about your background.
I am originally from Des Moines, IA but moved to Omaha, NE when my father passed away in 1994. I lived there until fifth grade, then moved to my grandparent's house in Long Beach, CA with my mother. I attended Elwood P. Cubberley K-8 (where I had Arthur as a student) then Robert A. Millikan High School, the same schools that both my mother and aunts attended. I started photography in middle school, and did semi-professional work in high school. Due to everything that went on with my mom's illness, I had to drop out of my first semester of college. Now I am working as a freelance photographer/videographer to try to make ends meet.

What was your mother like?My mom was a very genuine and caring person. Thinking of others before herself was a constant. She was multi-faceted, and capable. Very Intelligent and creative, not only a computer whiz but a skilled artist with multiple mediums. She was also loving, not just of me, but of life and all that it contains. She loved anything Star Trek, and was quite the music aficionado as well. Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, and David Bowie were among her favorites.

What did your mom's illness teach you that you would share with others?
Based on my experience with my mother and breast cancer, I would say it is helpful to be knowledgeable and really open. A positive attitude and sense of humor is key, but so is a readiness for the worst. This preparedness can be the most important factor in helping your loved ones. If you are prepared for the worst, then you will be able to think clearly and be able to help instead of being a bystander. Cancer is a very threatening and the very word has become quite a foreboding term. It is important to be very supportive and loving, everyone likes to be in a happy mood and this is no different when you become ill. I recommend regular doctor visits and self-exams, because knowing before it develops into something harder to manage is vital.

How has it been for you on your own since your mother passed?
Being on my own at 19 has definitely defined my sense of self and made even more aware to the world around me. My whole life, I have had to be a little more mature and independent for my age due to the fact that besides my mother, there was no one else to take care of us. I run not only my own business, but a household and my own finances. It is an everyday challenge, but thanks to the guidance and support of my mother and those around me, I am confident in myself and my situation.

What would your mom say about this breast cancer awareness walk that you are planning? She would be very proud, I actually talked with her on multiple occasions about a trip like this, at the time there was no motive other than for adventure and my portfolio. She said, “If I was ten years younger, I would go with you.” She would advise me on every danger known to mankind and make sure I called everyday or at least every few days.

What do you hope to achieve personally from this walk?Personally I hope to achieve a better understanding of myself and this world. I want to have an extensive knowledge of this entire country and those who are inhabiting it. I want to make a lot of new friends/connections and have one of the largest personal archives of the world.

What do you hope to achieve for the cause of breast cancer?I hope to raise awareness throughout the nation, the numbers will hopefully be larger than I can imagine. I will personally be meeting with thousands of people, and in this intimate setting I will do my best to spread awareness and a message of hope/optimism. I wish to raise a minimum of $50,000 to help start my organization and to make a large donation that will help save lives.

To learn more about Arthur Hitchcock and how you can support his walk for breast cancer, from California to Maine, here are some other published articles and his web sites.   Next week, Arthur will share more about his mother Janet, from his eyes.

Sending Thoughts and Prayers

Waking up early this morning to the devastating footage of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan was sobering (not that I was drunk). My family has friends and distant relatives in Japan and the urgency sets in to start making phone calls overseas even though there is a part of you that knows a busy signal may be at the other end for quite some time.

In addition, the coastal areas of California, as well as most of the entire west coast have been put on tsunami warning as the domino effect makes its way around the world. Things like this bring a heartbreaking situation even closer to home with us living less than a mile from the coast in southern California and my parents watching for the San Francisco tsunami advisory.

I headed off to work this morning after hugging Stella a little bit longer and tighter not because there is tsunami warning for our area but because my heart goes out to all the people who are searching for their parents, children, brothers, and sisters. Let us keep them in our hearts through the many days and trying weeks ahead. I hope this post finds all of you safe with your little ones close at hand.

Haute Mom Dilemma #34 - That Mom

Well, I have become that mom. I had always wondered if I would be one of those nervous, overprotective moms that others look at and think, “Gee, loosen up”. I totally am. For the first few months after Stella was born, I actually let myself think that there was hope for me. I tried to go with the flow and be open minded, leaving all of my own issues with sharp corners, dust, dirt and germs behind. Well, it didn’t even last a year.

What really has brought this all out is the fact that Stella has been attending quite a few children’s birthday parties. I am usually quite excited for these fun-filled events as I am far away from reaching my birthday party max. My thoughts are filled with seeing some good friends and watching Stella play with other babies her age. It is so amazing to see the babies communicate as they all scream and shriek and point back and forth in a language that is a mystery to all us adults.

At the last few birthday parties, the “that mom” side has come out. When I walk into the party, all I can see is dirt, germs, and danger. I begin to fear that baby Stella is going to get her clothes dirty, contract some nasty, goopy nose illness, or smack her head on something. Even worse, get smacked in the head by the older, more unruly party goers. I start to tighten my hold on her as she squirms and wiggles in attempt to get out of my arms and join the party. What a nightmare.

Breathe, I tell myself, or rather my husband does. As I gingerly place her in what appears to be a safe spot, I smile and try to look relaxed, but am well prepared to shoot my “teacher look” at any child that dares to somehow harm Stella. Unfortunately, my precious child is destined to give her mother a heart attack. The other weekend I looked over at Stella in a baby wading pool of plastic balls just in time to see her sucking the fingers of another little boy. Good thing I know his mom. They should have alcohol at these things. Maybe my husband’s theme of “Kegs and Clowns” for Stella’s 1st birthday isn’t such a bad idea. Stella loves to party.

A Walk from California to Maine

Baby Arthur and his mom
I was watching the news the other night (a rare occasion for me) and was depressed at the entire goings on. I wondered if the stories I was watching were the best that was out there and then flipped the channel back to some dumb reality show. I mean, it wasn’t much different than watching the news.

I have a story that I would like to share and teased about a few weeks ago. I have been a Health teacher for 11 years now and have spent many days wondering if or how I could truly make a difference in my students’ lives. Through a series of events, I reconnected with an old student named Arthur Hitchcock. I know him as Artie, and have quickly reminded myself that he is no longer in middle school and that I need to refer to him as Arthur now that he is 19 years old. I am trying my hardest not to ruffle his hair too.

Janet at The Great Wall in 2005
Arthur shared with me what he had been doing in the past seven years and the story shook me to my core. I found myself listening to Arthur speak and experiencing emotions as person, a teacher, and (quite a new one) a mother. Arthur has recently become an orphan. His father, a professional photographer, passed away when Arthur was only two years old from a heart condition. In October, he unexpectedly lost his mother, Janet, to stage 4 breast cancer. He is now completely on his own, and relies on his photography to pay the bills.

In the midst of all this, Arthur is planning a trip, a very long trip that most would do in a car. Instead, in a grass roots movement, Arthur will be relying only on his feet during his 6,400 mile trip, across the United States. May 11, 2011 will mark a life changing day for Arthur, and for breast cancer awareness. His walk, from Long Beach, California to Augusta, Maine, will be to raise money and awareness for the fatal disease that took his mother. Along the way he will leave his footprints and his message while he soul searches. On his back, Arthur will carry everything he needs and over his shoulder, will be his trusty camera, capturing it all. He plans on sleeping where his head may fall and his only support will be his best friend, Anthony Felix (also a former student), who will meet up with him at prearranged spots every 100 miles.

As a mother, I worry about simple things like Arthur being hungry or not having a warm enough jacket. I have promised to help him gather funds and resources for both his cause (breast cancer awareness) and his walk. His list was simple; all he wanted was a tent, a sleeping bag, and a GPS system. Because I am a haute mom, I added to it.

I am asking all of you moms to help me help Arthur, who estimates he will be gone one year. I need all the mom power with me so that we can be sure that Arthur can leave on this journey, with nothing to worry about but the weather. The cause is one that touches all of us and, as a mother, if I were no longer able to be there for Stella, I would pray that another woman would open up her motherly wings and embrace her.

The only thing that I ask is that you share this story with your family, friends, on your blogs, and any other means of communication. I am also including Arthur’s websites for any one who would like more information on his walk, his story, see his photography, or leave a breast cancer donation to help Arthur reach his $50,000 goal. If you can think of other ways to help, please let me know. All comments and well wishes you post on Haute Mom will be shared with Arthur as well.

Additionally, to follow Arthur’s suit, I am going to not only to keep you all updated with his whereabouts but am also going to dedicate one post a month to breast cancer awareness. This campaign will begin with a tribute to Arthur’s mother and then spotlight one breast cancer survivor until Arthur returns. If any of you haute moms are breast cancers survivors or know of someone who deserves the spotlight, please let me know.

Stay tuned for an interview that I had with Arthur as he opens up and shares more about his life, one step at a time. Each week I will share more about Arthur and his journey so be sure to check back in on him.

Happy Hump Day! What better way to get over the midweek hump then to kick off your heels and do a little blog hopping.

Haute Mom

This week we our featuring our first Guest Hostess, Retro Housewife: The Remix. It is "The Housewife's handbook to food, wine, and garage sale finds" so this bog is right up our alley (especially, the food and wine part). If you didn't stop by her blog and follow her last week, this week is your chance!

Blog Hop Rules: This is a low key hop. After all...it is Welcome Wednesday, here to get the inspirational juices flowing and find other blogs we can stalk! Put those feet up, relax, and join the bloggy fun. There are a few rules though:

1. Follow the two hostesses, Haute Mom and Queen of our Castle! Be sure to leave a comment so that we can follow you back.

2. Follow our guest hostess, Retro Housewife: The Remix

3. Link up your blog for all of us to love.

4. Make an attempt to check out at least two new blogs. Don't know where to start? How about the two blogs above you? If you love the blog, become a follower and leave them a comment letting them know.

So link up! You don't have to post about the hop...but you know how we ladies work, the more the merrier. We would love it if you would help us spread the word and help Welcome Wednesday grow!
