Feeling the effects of summer on the horizon and what two kiddos at home has in store prompted me to coin this little note to myself. Because as many of you know, the joy that some feel when summer comes, is not always shared by us moms.

Dear Self,

I have a few things that I need to say to you. Things that cross my mind often, but like so many words and thoughts, do not get spoken out loud enough.

I am sorry. Just like the my children, you have needs. Lots of them. And while I answer my children's needs and ensure that they have all that is required to be happy and healthy, I do not do the same for you. I sometimes ignore what you are telling me, asking you to go without rest, food and heck, sometimes even water. I expect you to stop complaining and deal with it even though the needs that you have are so easy to fulfill. I would never ask that of a loved one and, unlike my little ones, at some point you just stop complaining.

Thank you. While I push you around, ignore your protests and place expectations on you that I would never place on a loved one, you continue to come through for me. You find energy, strength and courage in all that I ask you to do. You are tireless and relentless in all that you do.

You deserve more. There are so many times where I think about pampering you. Getting a massage to ease your tired muscles, a pedicure to console your feet (that carry me for miles - literally) and whisking you away on a vacation where you can rest in peace and quiet. But I don't do these things as much as I think about them and you remain ignored yet faithful.

I know that you feel that summer is coming. And while so many relish in what that means, I know for you, it means less peace, less quiet. more activity, more chores and more energy. I can feel you quietly asking me to allow you to take a load off before the little ones are home everyday, playing tirelessly and relentlessly.

I will whisper more promises in your ear - promises of quiet time and pampering although it may only be for a few minutes a day. But unlike many, you will appreciate those few minutes and restore yourself quickly so that I can be a tireless, ambitious, energetic, marathoning mom. And know that, if I forget to tell you daily, I love and appreciate you and what you allow me to do.

I am nothing without you.

Love,
YourselfAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00668263020023534928noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3488643750150089437.post-72902377332219070362017-06-09T14:16:00.000-07:002017-06-09T14:16:54.349-07:00Missing Milestones and Avoiding a Meltdown (for both mom and child)Oops, I did it again.

Nope, not the Brittany song but the real life, mommy moments that I have. Just when I feel like a mom rock star, I do it again and feel that dreaded, pit in the stomach, "I am a mom fail" feeling all over again.

I missed a moment. Not like a temper-tantrum moment or a "watch me mom" moment but a really, crucial, it only happens once kind of moment.

If it sounds like I have done this more than once, you are right. And it doesn't feel good. The missed first lost tooth, the Christmas recital...and now, the second missed pre-school graduation ceremony. (Yes, I said second.) I know, I know, "it's just pre-school" says every non-mommy out there. But you all get me. And I missed it.

Now the reasons why these things happen are not important, but what is important here is that there are ways to cope with the missed milestones, ways that will benefit both you and your
child. The bottom line is that, no matter how hard you try, unless you are Wonder Woman (and we all want to be her), you are going to miss moments. At some point in time, it is going to happen.

So, the bigger question is HOW can we cope when these moments are missed? What are some strategies to use when that time actually comes?

I have three strategies that not only will sooth your soul, but also that of your child's.

Forgive Yourself

Memories in the Making: Celebrate by having a family adventure,
going to your favorite restaurant or making a favorite meal!

We all know that "mom guilt" is a tough one. I am sure most moms, at some point during the day feel a sense of that and it is at its strongest when we miss a special moment. You are an amazing mom. Your children are fed, clothed and loved. That is really what matters.

Talk to Your Child
Whether you know you are going to miss the special moment or realize it in hindsight, talk to your child about their accomplishment. Remind them how much you love them, how proud you are and that there is no other place that you would rather be then there with them. It is not as important to give them the reason why you were absent but rather the fact that you missed not being able to be there.

Celebrate in Your Own Way
All things can be fixed with a proper celebration. Who needs to traditional award ceremony in the dark auditorium anyway? Decide how to celebrate and make the milestone special. Better yet, ask your child how they would like to celebrate their accomplishment. Make your little one feel special and recognize them in your own, unique, family way. These are the memories that will last.

It is not about the missed milestone but rather the make up moment. You can create the joy and celebration of what your child has accomplished on your own time and in your own way. Chin up mama, I know how important it is to be there for EVERYTHING but unless you are going to follow your kids around FOREVER (please, don't be that mom), there will be missed moments. But you and your magical mom touch can still ensure that the special moment is celebrated and captured forever.

But have you ever stopped to think about what KIND of time you are spending?

Think about it, is your time simply time spent (quantity) or is it truly focused and uninterrupted (quality) time?

Remember the "good old days" when dinner time was simply that, the whole family sitting down catching up on one another's day. Or bed time included stories, possibly bible readings and prayers?

Quality time is crucial for connecting with your family. It is when bonds form, values and ethics are taught and honest communication is encouraged. Further, what messages are we teaching our kids about relationships and bonding when we allow time to together be constantly interrupted by television, iPads and phones? That our time with them is important...until our notifications sound?

I know this is hard! We are moms and we will multi-task! It is in our nature to try to do a bunch of things all at once, but when it comes to our loves ones, we need to make time for quality.

Here are three tips:

1. Include Your Children
Sometimes it is inevitable to have to get things done when your kids are carving attention. Try including them in the tasks that you have to do when possible. Take them with you to the grocery store and allow them to pick up a fruit or vegetable to purchase. If you can't avoid working from home, perhaps there is something they can help you with - stacking papers up neatly, sorting, etc.

2. Turn Off Technology

Hiking is one of our family faves for spending quality time.

Ok, I know, I am ADDICTED to my phone. Like sheer panic, the world is caving in when I can't find it addicted. But when I stop and think about how much I allow checking my phone to sidetrack me when I am with my kiddos, it saddens me. So...it's time to turn it off. Whether this mean ringers on silent, putting the phone in another room, enabling "Do Not Disturb", shut it down, at least for chunks of time and show your kids that they have you full, undivided attention. Better, yet, go someplace that is just not phone friendly. Our family's new favorite is going hiking - can you say limited cell phone reception?

3. Divide and Conquer
Sometimes your kiddos need time with you one on one. When this happens divide and conquer. If you have more than one child, this is the perfect opportunity to split the kids up among parents or family members and give each of them some one on one time. Remember those special moments you spent alone with one of your parents or family members? Your kiddos will too. :)

Inspirations that will take us all the way through Labor Day.

We can all do the red, white and blue fruit kabobs, and while always a favorite, this haute mom goes for savvy, smart and creative. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they are about as simple as boiling water.

A Sweet and Patriotic Treat

This idea is pure genius and sure to be enjoyed by everyone. Blog Room to Inspire hit the jackpot with some Red Vines and a bit of patriotic scrapbook paper.

Cut the paper in strips

Wrap the strips around a bundle of Red Vines

Secure with double stick place.

Easy even for a kitchen rookie like me!

Red and Blue With Flavor

This is at the top of my list because it involves, you guessed it, no cooking what so ever!

Note: This can also be mixed up with regular chips (hello blue potato and regular chips) as well as probably a hundred other yummy possibilities.

Purchase patriotic paper cones or make some with scrapbook paper.

Toss in red and blue tortilla chips, colored potato chips or any other colorful combo of snack items!

The other thing that makes this straight from the smarty pants brain is that it cuts down on cooties. Nobody likes all those hands in the community chip bowl.

Patriotic Sugar Wafers

You had me at wafer. Everyone loves a little something sweet and is it just me or are cakes and cupcakes a little over done? Besides, none of us moms want our kids chowing down on that..I mean, hellooooo...can you say HYPER? I think these are the perfect size, simple to make (way more than baking) and who doesn't love a wafer?

You will need:

1. 1 package each of colored chocolate candy melts (found in the cake decorating aisle)

2. 1 package vanilla sugar wafers

3. Assorted sprinkles

Melt half the colored candy melts according to instructions

Lay out a sheet of parchment paper and dip each wafer into the chocolate

Place the dipped wafers onto the paper and cover with sprinkles

Allow to dry

Place in an airtight container so they don't go stale!

What a fun dessert thanks to Southern Made Simple! Perfect for kids to help with!

Implement these Time Management Tips! There is not enough time in the day? I have too much to do and can't get it all done! Sound familiar?

If us moms had a dollar for every time these thoughts crossed our minds, we would be millionaires! The truth is, with all the different hats that you wear as a mom, it often feels impossible, overwhelming and STRESSFUL to get all of your mom duties done in a day.

When stress enters the picture, we all know that our rock star mom hides in the closet and the hot mess comes out. And that's no good for anyone in the family! So what's the solution?

Follow me!

Implementing some quick time management tips into practice can allow you to get more done and lead to more harmony at the end of the day. Are you ready? Of course you are!

SET PRIORITIES
Being the haute mom that you are, of course you want to do it ALL! But let's face it, you can't! So set priorities! What are those non-negotiable things that need to get done today? Stick to two or three things that are most important and tackle those first. Anything more than three may cause you to feel overwhelmed and we all know what that leads to - procrastination!

MUST VS. WANT
When thinking about those priorities, learn to differentiate between things that MUST get done and things that you WANT to get done. Yes, we all WANT to kill those dust bunnies in the corner of the room but does that take priority over picking your kids up on time? You decide!

SCHEDULE QUALITY TIME
You are a rock star and that means that you multi-task all day long. But think to yourself, does that allow you to work most efficiently? How often do you set out to fold laundry, get sidetracked by the dust on the dresser, end up dusting and never getting the laundry put away? Sound familiar? We all do it! Unfortunately, all this leads to is a lot of things started but not finished. When setting out to do a task, be 100% focused on it.

BE MINDFUL OF YOUR "BEST" TIME
There are certain timed of the day when you are at your best. For example, do you have the most energy in the morning, afternoon or evening? Maybe that is when you schedule your workout time. Is quiet time a priority for you? Perhaps an hour after the kids get home is not the best time for that! Learn when you are most energetic and focused and schedule the things that require that during those peak times.

TIMEBOX
Time who? I know, right? Timeboxing simply means scheduling start and ends times to your tasks. If it's time to go to Target, give yourself a specific time for when you have to leave Target (because we all know we spend hours there - I've done it.) Knowing that you only have one hour to get in and out will keep you on track and more focused. This leads to less time wasted getting sidetracked by the cute toss pillows that were not on your shopping list. (They are adorbs, aren't they?)

MAKE IT OFFICIAL
You wouldn't not show up for a scheduled appointment or meeting right? Put your schedule into your phone or planner! Make it official! If 6 a.m. - 7 a.m. is workout time, schedule it into your phone and set that alarm! Gotta be out of Target by 2 p.m. Schedule it! Whether it's down time, carpools, shopping or a phone call you need to make, write it down, put it in the phone and treat it like an appointment! This will keep you on schedule and feeling like a sexy, savvy and systematic mom at the end of the day.

Whether you are a career mom, work from home or run your household full-time, you deserve to feel less stressed and more harmonious at the end of the day. These six tips will create the systems and routines that you need to get the job done!
Visions of plates full of fresh fruits and vegetables and roasted (skinless, of course) chicken dance through all of our heads. And we watch with pride as our children gobble it up and politely ask for seconds.

Ha! As if!

Please tell me why nobody pulls us aside when our kids begin eating solid foods to tell us the reality of what feeding our littles is like. Even IF we had the time to prepare those yummy meals, would they even eat it? You all know the answer to that.

The truth is, for me, that my kids live on Goldfish crackers. Well, Goldfish crackers and chicken nuggets with some apple slices thrown in here or there. Do they eat ANYTHING healthy? Of course! With some serious crying, whining, threatening and bribing that may or may not take place.

If I am being honest here, being that role model chef, is not all that it's cut out to be, is it?

There are many barriers that us moms face when preparing meals for our families. And those barriers alone are enough for most of us to throw in the oven mitt and pull out the hot dogs.

Common barriers that all moms face:

Time - Who HAS the time? Most families have erratic schedules. Whether you work outside of the home or are a stay at home mom, it is nearly impossible to have set meal times. Between your and your spouse's work schedules, kids' homework, practices and lessons and meal preparation, who can get dinner on the table by a decent time?

Budget - Fresh fruits and vegetables and trendy "health" foods like quinoa and coconut oil are expensive! The most budget friendly foods we can find include those that are canned, frozen or come out of a box. While not the poster children for healthy foods, these types of food answer a lot of our prayers, cheap, kid-friendly and easy to prep.

Lack of Resources - Coupon clipping, recipes, the ins-and-outs of meal prep and all things every mom wants. But a lot of us don't have these tools! Yes, Pinterest is awesome, but who has the time? Yes, I would love to make steel cut oats for breakfast, but how do you make them? Meal prepping on Sundays would save so much time during the week but how is it done? Do we have to eat the same thing every night because ain't no child in my house is going for that unless it's fries and chicken fingers.

These barriers are the exact reason why we find ourselves buying the same four things as the grocery store or inventing family nights like "Pizza Tuesday" and "Mac 'n Cheese Monday". But it DOESN'T have to be this way. No it doesn't!! Stay tuned for the solutions to these common mom problems and let's get our family food habits back in track!

In the meantime, share YOUR biggest barrier!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00668263020023534928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3488643750150089437.post-9385336082515746582015-01-08T11:32:00.000-08:002015-01-08T11:35:34.584-08:00Tips for a Healthy Start to 2015The
vast majority of people setting goals for 2015 have at least one health
related or fitness goal. While working out is half of the battle,
eating right makes up the other half.

Here are some simple tips to get your eating back on track.

1.
Curb your sweet tooth - Sweet cravings can be a killer and dangerous
when you have some cookies or chocolate around the house. Before you
reach for that piece of chocolate, reach for some fruit! Perhaps a slice
of apple with almond butter?

2. Stock up on diet-friendly foods -
having a stock of raw nuts, fat-free plain yogurt, and fresh fruits and
vegetables can help you stay in control at home. From healthy snacking
to low-calorie substitutions (plain yogurt is a healthy exchange for
sour cream) these food will help you stay on track!

3. Police
your proteins - while many people focus on meals that are low-carb,
proteins can carry a lot of hidden fat and extra calories! If you
protein source takes up more than half of your plate, it is too much!
Fruits and vegetables should make up half of your plate with proteins
and whole grains sharing the other half!

4. Don't let happy hour
get too...happy - when you know you are heading out for a night on the
town, there are a few things to remember so that you don't drink too
many calories. Blended drinks such as daiquiris and margaritas are full
of unnecessary calories! Switch to a wine spritzer or even soda water
with a splash or juice!

5. Find your balance - do not ever feel
like you have to deprive yourself. If you want a piece of chocolate
cake, eat it! Just remember that calories in = calories out. If you
spurge a bit then run the extra miles that day or the next. It's all
about balance!

While there are SO MANY things to do to reach those
health and fitness resolutions of yours, these five simple tips are
easy enough to stick to without any need for a life-changing behavior!
Make this your best year yet!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00668263020023534928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3488643750150089437.post-53771647465177856892014-10-31T11:23:00.001-07:002014-10-31T11:23:25.522-07:00Halloween Treats and Tips

Halloween is
here, and we have decorated as usual: graveyard, strobe lights, heads
hanging, giant spiders covering the house and the fog machines ... it's
not Halloween without the fog machine.

This year decorating was a special moment with both the little ones being able to pitch in.

As always, Stella, now 4-years-old had her own
ideas about what she was going to be this year. I have found it
increasingly difficult to keep her focus on age friendly costumes when
the options out there look like small, adult get-ups.

I finally got smart and asked her what
she would like to be, then went out and bought her a costume. Perhaps I
took a little bit of the fun out of it for Stella but, each year, I get
tired of vetoing all of her choices because they are too skimpy, or too
“adult” for her. And, it turns out, she is very happy with her more
than appropriate witch outfit.

As for Carter, I could never have imagined how
much easier having a boy would be. His mind changes constantly, which to
me translates to mean that he really will be happy with anything. So at
this point, as long as it doesn’t require him to wear a hat or
headpiece for too long and it involves him going from house to house, we
are in the clear. A dinosaur will be walking the streets tonight.

As always, making sure that Halloween is a safe
and happy holiday, I will be taking some steps. While we all know the
safety tips on checking the kids’ candy, it is equally important to make
sure that the kids are safe while walking around trick or treating.
Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are
no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.

Cheers to all you parents out there as you fold,
zip, tuck, and pin your little ones into their Halloween costumes.
Have a safe Halloween and don't be afraid to eat some of that candy, after all, it's no good for the kids!

So Are Free HugsNow that Stella is four, I am finding that life’s lessons seem to be needed day to day. Gone is the time when a mom’s love was the only thing that mattered — in its place, is a curious child who tests limits and wants answers.

Because of this, I always try to embed what I can in our daily activities. Maybe it is a little talk about kindness or teaching her empathy when she steals her brother’s Crayon. Perhaps it is talking about perseverance when she gets frustrated and wants to give up.
I often feel like maybe these little speeches wouldn’t be needed if there were more examples of these things in front of her. While I know there are good people in the world, it seems as though what little Stella sees is from those who are doing things that she has learned not to do.

“Why did that man not say excuse me when he bumped into you mommy?”

“Why are those people not talking nice to each other?”

“Why did (so and so) say to (such and such) that she was ugly today?”

Whether my little one is such a whistle blower or she just has a watchful eye, it often saddens me that she sees more of what is wrong than the beauty in what life can be.

I came across a video that I wanted Stella to watch. The video is of a man, Ken Nwadike, CEO of Superhero Events, who goes out to running events, stands on the course, and offers “free hugs.”

The “Love Movement” touches me for a number of reasons. First, I am a runner, and have been in many running events where I could have used a hug from someone. Second, when watching the videos, things like racism don’t exist. Nobody sees or thinks about color, fear, or gender. People see a genuine kind act and they go for it! Men and women cross over to jump into Ken’s arms for their free hugs.

These are the things I want Stella to see. I want her to see someone, a stranger to most, who takes his time to go and spread love to people. I want her to know that everyone deserves love and kindness no matter what age, gender, or color. I want her to know that random acts of kindness touch people forever and that she has the power to do that.

Whether you want a teachable moment or just want to feel good. Watch “Free Hugs” from the San Francisco Marathon last weekend.

With all the choices available to us haute moms, this question is likely to turn up hundreds of answers.

As part of my Fit Approach Sweat Pink Ambassador role, I was lucky enough to be chosen to participate in the Fuel Your Better Campaign by Vega Sport.

Hubby and I after M2B

As someone who is consistently participating in at least one half marathon and training for two to three full marathons a year as well as challenges that include back to back events like Disney Dumbo Double Dare, I am always looking for products that will better my performance. I have noticed that as I get older, I am not able to bounce back as quickly as before.
Vega Sport intrigued me for one main reason. It is 100% vegan. There are no animal products. I tested out the Accelerator which is a powder formulated especially for recovery.

After trying it out after a ten mile training run, I was sold. No upset tummy and I felt fantastic the rest of the day, and more importantly, the day following. The real test came weeks later after pacing my husband at Mountains To Beach Marathon in Ventura, CA. I was able to get right back to the kids as soon as I got home and didn't have the usually soreness or tightness that I feel after a distance run.

I can't think of anything better to help this Haute Mom stay in shape without missing a beat!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00668263020023534928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3488643750150089437.post-63883154878689056332014-05-06T15:55:00.003-07:002014-05-06T15:55:50.592-07:00When Life Gives You Lemons

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">When life gives you lemons, make lemonade; is that how
the saying goes? I realize that this is a tough lesson for us all, especially
when trying to teach it to your children.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This past Monday, I was glued to the internet as I
watched the Boston Marathon. As a runner, it is the mecca of marathon events
and as someone who was watching the event live last year when the bombings
occurred, I couldn’t miss it.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I had several friends who had flown to Boston to
participate after hard training to qualify. I had even more friends watching
from home after missing their own qualifying time by seconds. One of my close
friends decided to fly to Boston to support runners after he missed his own
qualifying time by a few seconds.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Ken Nwadike, CEO of Superhero Events (they put on
the Hollywood Half Marathon, Costume Party Run, and the Awesome 80s Run series)
decides to make the trek to Boston after dealing with disappointment this year
when his attempt to qualify for Boston failed by a mere few seconds.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Why? To go and support the thousands of runners
(almost 36,000 to be exact) that had qualified and to show that the journey is
not always about your own achievement.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Wearing a “Free Hugs” shirt and carrying a matching
sign, this race director stood on the course and offered hugs to the
participants running by. The reaction was astounding. As I watched his video of
the experience, I couldn’t help but finally understand the truth behind life’s
plan not always being in our hands.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">You can see in this video the reaction that Ken
received from his kindness of choosing to fly across the country to show his
love and support for the Boston Marathoners. People not only run clear across
the course but double back just to get one of his hugs.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Free Hugs

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I showed Stella the video at which she asked, “What
is that man doing?” I explained that his hope was to be a runner but since he
could not, he decided to be a part of the other runners’ experience and spread
hugs.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">My innocent daughter smiled and replied, “I bet the
runners liked the hug more than Ken running.” From the looks of the video,
Stella was absolutely right.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">So many lessons in such a simple act from random
acts of kindness to the tough lesson of sometimes, things that we really want
don’t happen for a reason because someone else has a bigger and better plan for
us.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">While choosing to eat healthy is the first step,
getting the rest of the family to follow suit, may be a challenge. I can eat as
healthy as I choose, for Stella (3 ½ years-old) and Carter (18 months) this is
a whole other story.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I know the importance of ensuring that my little
ones develop good eating habits at an early age. I am not sure if it is my
fault (tracing back to my pregnancy cravings), but they both have quite the
sweet tooth. But habits should be formed now because as they get older, they
will be harder to break.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Here are some things that I have tried that have
proved to have some success with keeping the kids’ eating habits on track:

choice consists of chips or rice cakes, it is no surprise that the kids will
choose chip. I mean, come on, wouldn’t you? Both of my little ones are old
enough to make choices (even if Carter does this simply by pointing and shaking
his head). When I allow them to open the pantry for a snack, they find the
least healthy item in there. Instead, I will select two things to choose from,
like applesauce or a banana, that way, I am happy with whatever they choose. If
the kids don’t want either? Then they must not be that hungry

they were eating what hubby and I were eating. They now gobble up things like
tofu and salmon and turn their noses up at peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
The best part? Mom or dad only has to cook one meal!

other ways to reward her for things. Perhaps it is an extra book before bed or
allowing her to choose a game for us to play. Maybe I print out some free pages

kids’ risks of these nutrition-related diseases is easier than dealing with a

Festivities mean parties and parties mean food. The holiday times usually mean chaos for the family schedule and eating.

I really try to celebrate the holidays without allowing all the unhealthy food and sweets to throw my family off track. This is important to me since I run frequently and am always trying to eat smart for my next half marathon adventure. Being a health educator, I also know the importance of keeping my little ones from going off the junk food deep end.
These are some things I do to model healthy holidays around the house:

Substitute Low Fat/Low Calorie Ingredients
• I often use two egg whites in the place of one egg. I've learned this can reduce the cholesterol and produce the same result.
• Try to substitute applesauce for oil, margarine or butter in muffins, breads and sweets. I try substituting a small amount at first; the more I substitute, the more the texture of the finished product changes. My family never notices the difference!
• For dips, sauces, dressings and pie toppings, I use fat-free ingredients. Fat-free yogurt, sour cream and whipped topping have the same effect without the extra fat.
• Choose reduced-fat or low-fat cheeses for salads and casseroles. This is easier on the waist and the kids’ tummies.

Party Smart
• I try to start the day with a healthy breakfast. Low-fat yogurt with granola and berries, eggs with whole wheat toast and tomatoes, or toast with peanut butter and bananas. Eating a hearty breakfast makes the whole family less likely to indulge in holiday goodies throughout the day, wherever they may be.
• I choose carefully between foods you definitely will eat, those you will sample and those to skip. I talk to Stella, my 3-year-old, about what to avoid before the party, and we stick with that plan. For example, we will plan to eat dinner with some vegetables BEFORE we get dessert.
• I don’t rush to eat. Socialize and settle into the festivities before eating.
• Moving the socializing away from the buffet or appetizer tray is something that always keeps me out of trouble. It's my secret to minimizing unconscious nibbling.
• I fill the family’s plate with fruits, vegetables, and other healthy choices. This makes less room for those high calorie/fatty foods.

Stay On The Move
• I try to schedule outside time even if it means only heading out for 20-30 minutes before it gets dark. This keeps the family moving and off the couch.
• I encourage my family and guests to join me on walks or runs. If I have visitors, I ask them to come along. If they don’t run, I take them for a nice walk.
• I like to join in holiday and family-friendly events this time of year. There are so many fun walking/running events through the holiday season. Events such as the Holiday Half in Pomona have family fun expos all the way to half marathons that welcome costumes and strollers! That’s where we will be this weekend!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00668263020023534928noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3488643750150089437.post-34995607635915715082013-11-28T07:30:00.000-08:002013-11-28T07:30:01.069-08:00Thanksgiving ThanksIt's no secret that my family has been going through tough times. But we are not different than any family. Everyone experiences ups and downs.

Something that I am finding out is that these tough times are changing my ways, my thinking, my attitudes. Changing them forever.
I have become so much more thankful than I used to be. Things that I used to take for granted have become daily blessings. It is surprising actually that I had so much and never noticed. Now that so much is gone, I'm more grateful for the little things.

So to say my thanks and spread the spirit of Thanksgiving, I would like to share my new found blessings I give thanks for.

1. I am thankful that my alarm goes off at 5 a.m. in the morning so that I can head out for a dawn run. I see the sunrise and smell early morning a few times a week, and that's something many people miss.

2. I am thankful that I can only run three or four miles during the week because I have to rush back to get ready for work. My job used to be something that tied me down, but now it is everything that allows me to provide for my family.

3. I am thankful for my community. There are people who I barely know who have come forward, in amazing ways, to offer help, assistance and support. It humbles me, and it makes me want to be a better person.

4. I am thankful for the little voices and pitter-patter of feet that wake me up on the few days I have the luxury of sleeping in. They are my children, my reason behind any action, my heart.

5. I am thankful for my health. I can run, jump, play and swim with my family.

6. I am thankful for the roof over my head. With its old electrical system and its leaky roof, it keeps us warm at night and provides shelter, which unfortunately, some people do not have.

7. I am thankful for my family. While family can be such a source of headache and drama, my family has circled around us, supported us during our worse times.

8. I am thankful for my hubby. We don’t always get along, and we don’t always agree, but I am most thankful that in our toughest times we have one another to lean on. I have a person who will always be on my team through thick and thin.

Regardless of situation or circumstance, it is the start of the season of giving thanks and spreading joy. Joy, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, and I am so grateful that my vision is clear.

Putting her dramatic nature aside, I was still hurt by this comment.

It made me think. Am I a bad mom? Was I being a bad parent?

Us parents are busy. We work, we budget, we cook, we clean ... When I get home from work, I’m tired. I get an average of six hours of sleep at night. Sometimes I feel lucky that I find time to wash my hair.

On the way to pick up the kids after work, I feel excited. For a moment I realize that I missed my little babies all day, and I can’t wait to hug them, kiss them, squeeze them and smell them.
And then that moment is gone.

I think about dinner and how I'm going to get that dinner on the table while I am home alone with two kids until hubby gets home. I think about all the things I meant to do that day but never got to. I think about the laundry, the dishes and the phone calls I want to return but won’t be able to once my kids start running loose around the house.

I feel tired. Sometimes I just want quiet for one minute, I want this so badly that I get home, turn on the TV and plop my little ones down in front of it in hopes that they will not need me for maybe five minutes. Just five whole minutes.

This of course, never happens. When they do need me, less than one minute later, I feel irritated and annoyed. I wonder why they just can’t leave me alone. Then I feel sad.

I see their precious, innocent faces and remind myself that they need me because I am their mother and that is my job. Am I bad parent?

No, I'm not a bad parent. I care for my family. I do what I can to survive, as many of us do on a daily basis. Considering the fact that Stella made her claim based on the fact that she was not allowed to have a cookie until after dinner further proves my point. Our children may make claims that are real to them but not realistic at all.

We must remember that no matter what we do, we do it for our kids. And that makes us all GREAT parents.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00668263020023534928noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3488643750150089437.post-28684059479021690002013-10-23T13:51:00.000-07:002013-10-23T13:51:18.445-07:00Huate Mom Goes MarathonerSometimes, with a family to manage, things seem impossible. There is no time, no help and too much to do. This past weekend I learned that nothing is impossible.

Last April I set a goal that seemed to be unreachable. At the Hollywood Half Marathon Expo, I walked past the Long Beach IBC Marathon booth and signed up for the full marathon. Although I was a seasoned half marathon runner, I had never given serious thought to running the full 26.2 miles. Who knows what was in the air that day, the smell of new running shoes maybe, but I did it. I signed up.
From that day the training began. Little by little, I plugged away building towards my marathon. I planned, I ran, I sacrificed. And so did my family.

While running is obviously a big part of my lifestyle, taking on the task of completing 15-, 20- and 23-mile training runs is a whole other ball game. Goodbye quick morning jogs; hello long three to four hour runs.

I often stopped along the way to reconsider. Training for the marathon was cutting into my already busy schedule and taking away from my family.

But, for anyone who knows me, I don’t back down. I do what I commit to, and I had already committed to my first full marathon. In my mind, I had to do this for myself and there was no going back.

On Sunday, October 13, I awoke at 3:30 am. The cool fall weather I had been hoping for promised to hold out long enough to get through my big day. I said goodbye to my children the night before and, leaving them behind with my mom, the hubby and I drove downtown in the dark.

Standing in the corral at the marathon start, I knew I had done the right thing. All of the time, the training and the sacrifice had been worth it. I was about to check an item off my bucket list.
There were a number of times on course where my children came to mind. My heart and my soul stayed focused on the things that give me strength.

As a mom, there are so many opportunities that we shrug off because of our families, busy schedules and time constraints. Yet I learned that sometimes, seizing an opportunity can be a positive experience for the whole family. It gives us pride as well as reminders of strength and ability. I am so fulfilled by my marathon completion.

I watch Stella walk around with my medal around her neck and know that all the hard work has given my children a positive lesson in never giving up. It will remind them to go for the goals that they may think are impossible. And, this experience reminds me of how wonderful it is to be a haute mom.
With high temperatures this past week and summer just around the
corner, it's that time again to think about a little sun safety.

As you enjoy the sunshine, remember that it's important to cover
all angles when protecting your children from the sun. It's estimated
that your child will get more than half of their lifetime sun exposure
before age 18, and using sun protection can decrease your child's risk
of getting skin-cancer later in life.

I've done some research on this subject and
learned that the sun has two types of ultraviolet rays that can cause
damage to the skin. These rays are UVA and UVB and both can be damaging
and cancer causing.

A sunscreen's SPF (sun protection factor) is a
measurement of how well it protects against sunburn. If you slather on
an SPF 30 product, you should be able to stay in the sun for 30 times
longer without burning than if your skin were bare. However, SPF only
measures how well a sunscreen blocks UVB. There are no numbers that
measure protection against UVA.

Apply sunscreen to your child everyday so that it
becomes part of their morning routine. Don’t forget places like their
hands, feet, ears, scalp, and the back of their neck. Get your children
used to putting on lip balm with SPF as well.

Because sunscreen is only one aspect of sun
protection and does not protect against UVA rays, parents need to take
other precautions.

Staying out of the sun when it's at its strongest
is crucial. This is usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. While outdoors,
seek shaded areas with your children if possible. Consider bringing a
sun shade if you are going someplace where shade is minimal.

Protective clothing is another important part of
sun protection. Putting on a wide brimmed hat can help protect your
child’s scalp, ears, eyes, face and neck. Consider looking for clothing
that has an ultraviolet-protection factor or UPF. Be sure that
sunglasses also say that they filter out the sun’s harmful rays.

Protected Kids = Happy Kids

Most importantly, be a good role model. Put on
sunscreen with your children and make it fun to play in the shade. Want
the little ones to keep their hats on? Wear yours as well. Make sun

Let’s face it. Some men are difficult to shop for, and birthdays and
Father’s Day occur every year. Much of the time, you may resort to personalized
birthday cards or Father’s Day cards and a gift card – admittedly not the
most exciting gift. However, if you paired that card with something else, you’d
have the idea present. Technology accessories provide a creative option if
you’re looking for the perfect gift for the guy in your life. Check out the
following men’s accessory trends for some ideas to get you started:

Meltdowns in public are never good, especially if they involve your child.

When I see meltdowns of little ones, my heart immediately goes
out the parent while I thank my lucky stars that it’s not my kid causing
the scene.

Miss Sassy

I actually live in fear of the meltdown. I would
like to think that I am a tough parent, but in all honesty, when I see
the hints of a temper tantrum outside of my home (stomping feet, frown,
furrowed brow, clenched fists) I will do almost anything necessary to
avoid it.

And that means give in.

I am proud to say that the other night, while at
dinner at a restaurant, Stella tried to use the threat of a meltdown. To
make a long story short, she was given a balloon, didn’t listen, and up
to the ceiling it went. She was sad, so we told her we would get her
another when we finished dinner — if she was patient. She wasn’t
patient. So she didn’t get a balloon.

Meltdown.

And I held my ground. Even though hubby took
9-month-old Carter and made a bee line for the front door, I stayed in
the middle of the restaurant and help my ground. Through the tears,
screaming, apologetic looks from the diners, and all.

Stella cried all the way to the car and the 10-minute car ride home. Mommy held her ground.

Of course, as they all do, Stella finally calmed
down. Later that night, feeling guilty but proud, I told Stella that I
was sorry that she had been sad and disappointed about the balloon. She
told me that it was okay and that next time, she was just going to
listen.

Score one for Mommy.
My babies are getting bigger everyday, but staying healthy and stress free is more important to me now more than ever.

When I was working full time in the travel industry, I would utilize the relaxing spas located at many of the world’s best resorts to recover from jet lag. Now as a full-time mother, with precious lives in my hands, I am a lot more conscious of how to live a more holistic lifestyle year round. I have always loved a good spa treatment, and with the joys of motherhood causing my "laugh lines" to grow deeper, I love the anti-aging benefits of rejuvenating face masks. Since spring always adds extra activities to my family’s already hectic schedule, it is during this time that I love to pull out my tried and true at-home beauty treatments when I can't make it to the spa.

Today’s beauty treatment was inspired by the Kahala's Hotel, Resort and Spa, one of the best hotels in Honolulu. Their signature anti-aging facial uses only the best all-natural ingredients, which left my skin feeling strong and renewed. Using the finest products Mother Nature has to offer, you too can feel the healing powers of one Honolulu’s best-kept secrets.

Below you will find the recipe for the Honey and Yogurt Moisturizing Face Mask to keep you looking and feeling young.

Honey and Yogurt Moisturizing Face Mask

• 1/2 cup plain yogurt
• 2 Tablespoons Aloe Vera gel
• 1 Tablespoon honey
• 1/2 peeled cucumber
• a few drops of chamomile oil

Pulse all ingredients in a food processor, just until combined. Apply liberally all over face and neck, making sure to avoid eyes. Leave on for at least 15 minutes to give it time to fully penetrate the skin and work its magic. Rinse off in the shower or remove with a soft, damp cloth. If you don’t use the entire
mask, you may store in a tightly sealed container in
the refrigerator for a few days until you’re able to
rejuvenate again. Enjoy!
Since I pride on being able to call myself a runner, and
running is the ONLY thing that I will take time and do for myself, the events
at the Boston Marathon have really affected me.

I know that terrible things happen in the world, and I am

Since I have run a number of race events, my last half marathon
was two weeks ago, I felt sheer horror when I saw what happened at the Boston
Marathon. I had been watching the race online since it started. I watched the
men’s, women’s and push winners cross the finish line. I asked my hubby if he
thought Boston was a realistic goal for me. I dreamed.

I came across a movement called Run For Boston. It was
simple, and I liked that. There were three things to do. First, run. Second,
wear blue or yellow on your run. Third, make a Run For Boston sign with the
name of your city on it and upload it to the Facebook page. Easy peasy.

On Wednesday night, a group gathered at a local park. Some
were part of my Galloway running group. Others just wanted to Run For Boston. We are

runners grabbed their neighbor. But to me, numbers don’t matter because in this
event, we are all united for Boston.

It wasn’t that long ago that computer equipment, like
laptops, was mainly used for business purposes. Now, thanks to the emergence to
technologies like tablets, Kindles, and iPhones, everyone can utilize all the
new tech toys that are available, regardless of ability level.

iPhone. They are used by both kids and businesses alike. The amount of apps
available at the App
Store from Apple can fit every need, regardless of a person’s tech-level.
So no matter if you need to edit a spreadsheet or just want to find fun games,
as the commercials say, “there’s an app for that.”

Something people love to do with their iPhones is purchase
different covers and cases to fit their mood and style. There are so many
different ways to customize your iPhone case, it is almost inconceivable. Many
people love to do custom iPhone photo cases with their favorite pictures of
family and friends. Shutterfly
offers great options for iPhone cases for any level of creativity. Many
iPhone users today have several cases so they can switch things up depending on
their style or mood that day.

Tablets

Tablets and the iPad have also revolutionized the computing
market. Just as powerful as laptops in many cases, using a tablet is a great
way to take portable computing to an entirely new level. Just like the iPad has
an app store, non-iOS tablets (namely the Android platform) has their own app store called Google Play. With
tablets today, you can do more than just answer email messages. You can read
books, watch movies, play games, and plenty more. And one of the best parts of
using a tablet is that it weighs far less than a laptop, making it perfect for
travel, and to entertain the kids!

So regardless of your ability level or budget, think about
what you would use your tablet for and then go and try them out at your local
electronics store before you make you final decision. Then once you made your
purchase, you will find plenty of covers and accessories to make your tech toy
your own.
